12 Superlative + Degree Modifiers

Adjectives

Superlative Adjectives are determiners used to make a comparison between things, people or actions, expressing the superiority of one thing, person or action which has a higher level of a particular quality. {see Adjective – Superlative, A1 level}

When used with Degree Modifiers, we intensify the degree of Superlatives.

Not all Modifiers can be used with Superlatives. Below you can see the structure of Superlative with Degree Modifiers:

  • Definitely
  • By far
  • Possibly + Superlative
  • Almost
  • Easily
  • She is definitely the most intelligent person for the HR manager.
  • My granddad is by far the oldest person in our workplace.
  • This is possibly the most sufficient laboratory I’ve ever been to.
  • That was almost the best interview I’ve ever had.
  • This job advertisement is easily the best one.

We use Degree Modifiers with Superlatives to show to what extent that they are superior, by adding these Modifiers we can intensify the degree of Superlatives.

We use Superlative Adjectives to make a comparison between things, people or actions, expressing the superiority of one thing, person or action. We can use certain Degree Modifiers before superlatives to show to what extent that they are superior. These degree modifiers are definitely, by far, possibly, almost and easily. (e.g. He gets by far the lowest salary.)

For example:
— “He gets by far the lowest salary.” = Degree Modifier by far gives the meaning that he gets the lowest salary among his colleagues.
