Letter: h+ a/an
Sounds and letter
The letter h can have different sounds.
It has a light sound and sometimes it’s not pronounced, especially in words which come from French like hour or honest.
It is also used to form digraphs (th, wh, ph).
It is preceded by a when it is pronounced and by an when it is not pronounced..
- A + h words:
- a history book;
- a happy couple;
- a hamburger.
- An + h words:
- an hour;
- an honest person;
- an honour.
- When h words are preceded by article “a“, h is pronounced;
- when h words are preceded by article “an“, h is not pronounced.
