Unit 8.1
Apostrophe
Introduction
The apostrophe is a punctuation and diacritical mark.
Form
Here you can see the symbol used to indicate an apostrophe: ‘
Example
- one thing belonging to two people:
- John and Jennifer‘s son is very tall.
- Robert and Rachel‘s cat is very fluffy.
- Diana and Laura‘s favourite teacher is called Mr Adams.
- time expressions:
- 1 year’s trial
- 2 days’ holiday
- a week’s pay
Use
We use the apostrophe:
- when one thing belongs to two people: we add ‘s to the last word of the personal reference.
- in time expressions: we add ‘s or only the apostrophe (depending on what letter does the word ends with) after the noun, not the number.
