Ellipsis
Introduction
Ellipsis is the omission of a phrase indicated by three dots.
Form
The word ellipsis comes from the Greek and literally means omission
To mark the ellipsis of a word or a whole phrase, we add a series of three dots together (…)
Example
- “Based on the law…, they decided to…“
- “I thought you were coming…“
- “You said you loved me…“
Use
We use ellipsis:
- to indicate an omission
- to create a pause/effect
- to show an unfinished thought
