Future: Be going to - Negative

Verbs

The Future is the tense used to predict or talk about future events. To be going to structure refers to strong intentions and formulating previsions using information we obtain in the present.

When expressed in its Negative form, the verb denies something about the subject.

The Negative form of this form of this structure is:
Subject + “to be” + not + going to + [infinitive form of the verb].

SUBJECT	TO BE - NEGATION	GOING TO + VERB
I	am not	going to + infinitive
You	are not	going to + infinitive
He/She/It	is not	going to + infinitive
We/You/They	are not	going to + infinitive

Plans and intentions for the future
- I’m not going to move to London next year.
- He’s not going to visit his parents in the summer.
- We are not going to visit you tonight.
Predictions
- It’s not cloudy outside, it is not going to rain.
- It’s not sunny today, it is not going to be a hot day.
- The profit is high, we are not going to go bankrupt.
Certainty
- I am not going to fall down if I sit well.
- This car is not out of it’s way, it is not going to crash.
- We are not going to miss the exam.

We use the future with the “To be going to” structure to talk about:

Plans and intentions for the future;
Negative predictions based on signs we see at the moment;
Things that are about to happen (that we are sure about them).

We can use the future tense with “To be going to” to talk about the Future. When used in its Negative form, something about the subject is denied.

The Future tense with “To be going to” in their Negative form has this structure:
Subject + “to be” + not + going to + [infinitive form of the verb].

For example:
—”Look at all the people. I think I’m not going to work one hour more.” = We can predict that I will not work one hour more thanks to some signs we see, for example, the few people that there are, that’s why we use the Future with “To be going to”.
> “I’ll not work one hour more.” = In this case we use the Future Simple because we express a future decision taken in the moment of speaking.

NOTE: We use this form of the Future tense primarily to talk about plans and intentions for the future, negative predictions based on signs we see at the moment and to say something is not about to happen.

Example: A corporation may use Books for Languages’ materials for internal professional development and training purposes.

Incidental charges to recover reasonable reproduction costs may be permitted. Recovery of nominal actual costs for copying small amounts (under 100 copies) of Books for Languages’ content on paper or CDs is allowed for educational purposes so long as there is no profit motive and so long as the intended use of the copies is in compliance with all license terms. Students must be informed that the materials are freely available on the Books for Languages’ site and that their purchase of copied materials is optional.

Example: An institution in a remote area has limited Internet access and limited network infrastructure on campus, and a professor offers to create CDs of Books for Languages’ materials relevant to his/her course. The professor may recover the costs of creating the CDs.
