The formula of the Superlative form is:
Subject + verb + the + superlative adjective + object.

One syllable

Jednosložni pridjevi: the + -est.
Generally, with one-syllable adjectives we just add -est
With one-syllable adjectives ending with one vowel and one consonant we usually double the final consonant before adding -est. (ex. big -> biggest)
With one-syllable adjective ending with -e we just add -st.

The + adj + -est

Two syllables ending in -y

Sufiks –y: mijenja -y u –i i dodaje se –est.

happy the happiest

Two or more syllables not ending in -y

The most + pridjev (bez promjena).

Dva ili više sloga koji ne završavaju na -y:
Dodajemo the most prije pridjeva i ne mijenjamo ništa. [… the most + adjective (without changes)…].

One syllable

  • I am the oldest in my family.
  • Their house is always the cleanest.
  • She believes that Italian is the simplest language in the world.

Two syllables ending in -y

  • Monica Bellucci is the prettiest woman alive.
  • She is the funniest girl I’ve ever met.
  • Dogs are the friendliest animals in the world.

Two or more syllables not ending in -y

  • She thinks that tennis is the most boring sport.
  • ‘War and Peace’ is the most popular Russian book.
  • Chinese is the most difficult language to learn.

We use Superlative Adjectives when we want to express the superiority of one thing, person or action over another.

The formation of the Superlative differs depending on the number of syllables and the suffix.

Npr.:
— Jednosložni pridjevi: “Claire is the oldest girl in the class.” = Riječ old ima jedan slog, dodamo samo -est (Kad pridjev završava na -e dodajemo samo -st).
— Dvosložni pridjevi koji završavaju na -y: “Claire is the prettiest girl in the class.” = Because the word pretty has two syllables and ends with -y, -y becomes -i and we need to add -est.
— Dva ili više sloga koji ne završavaju na -y: “Claire is most sympathetic girl in the class.” = Riječ sympathetic ima više od jednog sloga, moramo dodati most prije pridjeva. Pridjev se ne mijenja kad se koristi most.

Recovery of nominal actual costs for copying small amounts (under 100 copies) of Books for Languages’ content on paper or CDs is allowed for educational purposes so long as there is no profit motive and so long as the intended use of the copies is in compliance with all license terms. Students must be informed that the materials are freely available on the Books for Languages’ site and that their purchase of copied materials is optional.

Example: An institution in a remote area has limited Internet access and limited network infrastructure on campus, and a professor offers to create CDs of Books for Languages’ materials relevant to his/her course. The professor may recover the costs of creating the CDs.
