Verbs
Un verbo modale è un tipo di verbo ausiliare (aiutante) che non ha un senso di per sé ma che modifica il verbo principale, cambia il suo significato e dà più dettagli sull’azione.
May è un tipo di verbo modale ausiliare usato per parlare della possibilità che qualcosa accada e per chiedere o dare un permesso.
Affirmative
La forma affermativa del verbo May ha questa struttura:
subject + verb may* + verb (per esempio “go“).

La forma interrogativa del verbo May ha questa struttura:
verb may*+ subject + verb (per esempio “go“) + question mark (?).

Affirmative

- express wish or hope
- May the force be with you.
- May you both be happy together.
- May we have rain this year.
Negative
- You may not answer the phone call!
- She may not leave a message.
- I’m afraid that we may not interview the director.
Interrogative
- May I answer an important phone call?
- May she leave you a message?
- May we interview the director?
Usiamo May in forma affermativa quando:
- diamo permessi;
- non siamo sicuri riguardo qualcosa;
- esprimiamo desideri o speranze.
Usiamo May in forma negativa quando proibiamo qualcosa o per esprimere incertezza.
Usiamo May in forma interrogativa quando vogliamo fare una richiesta in modo gentile.
Usiamo il verbo modale May per parlare della possibilità che qualcosa accada e per chiedere o dare un permesso.
La sruttura della forma affermativa di “May” è la seguente:
subject + verb may* + verb.
Quando usiamo “May” in forma interrogativa proibiamo qualcosa o esprimiamo incertezza. La struttura della forma negativa di “May” è la seguente:
subject + verb may* + not + verb.
Quando usiamo “May” nella forma interrogativa facciamo una richiesta gentile o chiedimo della possibilità che qualcosa accada. La struttura per la forma interrogativa di “May” è la seguente:
verb May* + subject + verb + question mark.
Per esempio:
— “It may snow this winter.” = Usando la forma affermativa diciamo che vi è la possibilità che qualcosa accada.
— “It may not snow this winter.” = Usando la forma negativa diciamo che un evento è incerto.
— “May it snow this winter?” = Usando la forma interrogativa chiediamo se qualcosa possa accadere.
