Un Phrasal Verb (verbo frasale) è un verbo formato da due parti, da un verbo e da una particella.

Questa particella, in genere, dà ai verbi un significato completamente nuovo. È molto difficile capire il significato di un Phrasal Verb dalle parole che lo compongono.

Una frase contenente dei phrasal verbs ha solitamente questa struttura:

subject + verb + object + particle (preposition/adverb).

  1. break
    • They broke up last week. (end a relationship)
    • One prisoner broke out of jail. (escape)
    • Our car broke down in the middle of the road. (stop working)
  2. come
    • They came back very late yesterday. (return)
    • I came across my friend last week. (seem to be or meet by coincidence)
    • How did this subject come up? (be mentioned)
  3. look
    • When we’re away, my cousin looks after our chicken. (take care of something or somebody)
    • What are you looking for? (search for)
    • She always looks up to her father. (respect)
    • Look out! You’re going to fall down! (be careful)
    • I’m looking forward to your reply! (wait for something with excitement)
  4. put
    • We have to put the picnic off, it’s raining. (postpone)
    • You can put your backpack down on the bed. (place something on the table/floor)
    • I can’t put up with the noise you’re making. (tolerate)
  5. take
    • Take my coat off, it’s too hot. (remove a piece of clothing)
    • Susie takes after her mother. (follow somebody as an example)
    • He has to take his bike back. (return)

I Phrasal Verbs sono brevi parole formate da un verbo e da una particella.

La struttura di una frase che contiene un phrasal verb normalmente é:
subject + verb + object + particle (preposition/adverb).

Per esempio:
— “He told his girlfriend to come back.” = Il significato della frase viene modificato dal phrasal verb.
— “She should take her book back.” = Il sigificato della frase viene modificato dal phrasal verb.
