Il Past Continuous o Progressive è usato per parlare di situazioni che si sono verificate nel passato ed erano in progresso in ogni momento lungo un certo periodo di tempo.
Espresso in forma negativa, il verbo nega che qualcosa stava accadendo in un periodo di tempo passato.
Il Past Continuous o Progressive del verbo to work in forma negativa ha questa struttura:
subject + past simple of the verb to be + not + [verb + -ing].

Il Past Continuous viene usato nei seguenti casi:
- lunga azione di background interrotta da una più breve
- I wasn’t running in the park when you sent me that message.
- She wasn’t practicing sport when I called her.
- They weren’t watching TV when she got back from work.
- evento che accade in un momento esatto del passato
- I wasn’t running in the park at 9 o’clock.
- She wasn’t practicing sport when I called her at 11:45.
- They weren’t watching TV when she returned from work at 7 o’ clock.

- I wasn’t running.
- He wasn’t crossing the road.
- We weren’t watching TV during our break.

Usiamo il Past Continuous per parlare di evento e attività che accadono nel passato. Solitamente si intende mostrare che siano durate per un lungo periodo di tempo.
Il Past Continuous viene usato nei seguenti casi:
- una lunga azione di background interrotta inaspettatamente da una più breve (qualcosa succede all’improvviso mentre un evento più lungo si stava svolgendo);
- un evento che si stava svolgendo in un momento preciso nel passato (esprime una data, ora, o dà informazioni sull’orario in cui qualcosa stava accadendo in un momento esatto del passato);
- un’azione ininterrotta in svolgimento da tempo. (evento in svolgimento nel passato lungo un periodo di tempo esteso);
- la lunghezza di un periodo di tempo nel passato. (evento in svolgimento nel passato lungo un periodo di tempo esteso);
- azioni simultanee passate (qualcosa accade allo stesso tempo in cui stava accadendo qualcos’altro);
- sequenza di azioni svoltesi nel passato (usato per descrivere situazioni in cui diversi eventi si verificano allo stesso tempo);
- azione ripetuta o fastidiosa (con “always” o espressioni simili che indica l’idea di un evento ripetuto).
Usiamo il Past Continuous quando parliamo di situazioni avvenute nel passato ed erano in svolgimento tutto il tempo lungo un periodo. Usato in forma negativa, qualcosa che stava accadendo in un periodo passato viene negato.
Il Past Continuous in forma negativa ha questa struttura:
subject + past simple of the verb to be + not + [verb + -ing] (e.g. I was not playing).
Per esempio:
— “I was not playing football when the phone rang.” = Usiamo il Past Continuous per parlare di una situazione ininterrotta in svolgimento da tempo nel passatoto.
— “I did not play football.” = In questo caso, usando il Past Simple, viene espressa l’idea di qualcosa che non sta iniciando e non sta finendo nel passato.
