44 Causative Use of Have and Get

Causative Verbs are verbs that show the reason that why something took place. Subjects in Causative Verbs don’t take action by themselves but let someone to do for them. They cause something else to happen in a way. The Causative Verbs are: have, get, make, let.

We use Have to give responsibility.
We use Get for somebody to do something for us.

Sometimes the action, that is done by object, is presented in the base form or past participle form.

Have

The structure of the sentence is as follows:

  • Have + person + verb (in its base form);
  • Have + something + past participle of verb.

Get

The structure of the sentence is as follows:

  • Get + person + to + verb;
  • Get + something + past participle of verb.

Have

  • You are going to have the natural flower planted today.
  • The teacher will have the students study on exam including astronomy.
  • People had their president built an wind energy facility.

Get

  • I will get the doctor to give a medicine.
  • John got his elder child to wash the exotic flower.
  • They were too afraid of petting the stray dog but their mother got them to pet.

The have + person + verb structure is used to give someone the responsibility to do something.

Get is used to persuade somebody to do something. It has the same meaning with Have but Get is less formal.
