32 Concessive Clause

A Concessive Clause emphasizes an idea that offers the opposite of the main part of the sentence.

A Concessive Clause begins with whereas, yet, although or even though to emphasize the opposite idea of the sentence.

The structure is as follows:
Clause 1 + comma(,) + concessive clause + clause 2;
Concessive clause + clause 1 + comma(,) + clause 2.

  • I was 35 whereas I had grey hair.
  • Even though it seems freshly made, it is rotten.
  • They didn’t show their friendship yet.

We use Concessive Clause to emphasize the opposite idea of the main idea. We do that by adding conjunctions as although, yet, whereas etc. and we create a correlation between two sentences.

  • Although/Even though: In spite of the fact that, despite the fact that;
  • Whereas: Compared with the fact that;
  • Yet: Still, until now (present time).
