70 Would Used in Polite Requests & Offers
We use the modal verb Would to offer to do things for people or to invite them to do something. For polite requests we can use “Would“, “Would like” or “Would you mind doing…?“. {see Would Like, A1 Level}
Would like
- Affirmative: Subject + would + like + verb (to-infinitive form) + noun;
- Negative: Subject + would + not + like + verb (to-infinitive form) + noun;
- Interrogative: Would + subject+ like + verb (to-infinitive form) + noun + (?).
Would you mind doing…?
In Interrogative form the structure is as follows:
Would + subject + mind + verb + gerund + (?).
- I would like to study on astrology and astronomy.
- I wouldn’t like to study on astrology and astronomy.
- Would I like to study on astrology and astronomy?
- Would he mind helping me to cut down these trees?
To make offer we can use Would like structure with a noun and with a verb. It has the meaning of ‘to want‘, but it is used for more polite expressions. If it’s used with verb, we need to add to before verb.
Would you mind doing ..? is used for asking polite requests.
