7 Lack of Subject and Verb Agreement

Singular Subjects need singular verbs and plural subjects need plural ones. {see Subject + Verb Agreement, B1 level}

In addition to this the Indefinite Pronouns are followed by singular verbs.

The Indefinite Pronouns no one, nobody, somebody, someone are always counted as singular that is why they always take singular verbs.

  • No one attends their wedding.
  • Nobody wears boots during summer.
  • Somebody deletes unnecessary files regularly.
  • Someone gets up early every day in that house.

The Indefinite Pronouns have the following meanings:

  • No one: No person, nobody;
  • Nobody: No person, not anyone;
  • Somebody: Some person who is unidentified;
  • Someone: It is used for to address a single person which we do not know who he/she is.

Singular subjects are followed by singular nouns and plural subjects are followed by plural nouns. Indefinite Pronouns such as Someone, No one, Nobody, Somebody are singular pronouns and they need to be followed by singular verbs.

For example:
— “No one forgets what happened that night.” = No one is a singular subject and the verb that follows it gets “-s“.
