68 Dare as a Modal Verb

When used as Modal Verb, Dare is followed by an infinitive without “to. As a Modal Verb Dare means “someone is afraid to do something”.

Affirmative form

In Affirmative form it has this structure :
Subject + dare + verb.

Negative form

In Negative form it has this structure :
Subject + dare + not* + verb.

*Short version of the Negative form is: daren’t.

Interrogative form

In Interrogative form it has this structure :
Dare + subject + verb + (?).

  • Dare anyone make a bet there?
  • How dare you tell they were cowardice.
  • No one dare speak with a dictator.

There are some rules we should be careful when we create a sentence with dare as a Modal Verb:

  • Dare is not followed by to when it is used as Modal Verb;
  • Question and negative forms are formed without do.
